The number of hijacking incidents in Asian waters has decreased, and the maritime security situation has improved

The Regional Cooperation Agreement against Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia has released a report showing a significant decrease in hijackings in Asian waters in the first half of this year. There were 21 incidents in Singapore and the Strait of Malacca, a 49 per cent decrease from 41 incidents in the same period last year.

Most of these incidents occurred in the Singapore Strait's eastbound lanes, Prevention zones and westbound lanes, and in most cases did not result in injuries to crew members. About 40% of the criminals did not steal anything, and in 48% of the incidents, the stolen items were ship supplies such as engine spare parts.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh recorded 10 hijackings in the first half of this year, a significant increase from previous years, while Indonesia recorded 14 incidents, an increase of eight. There have been no kidnappings of crew members for ransom in the Sulu Celebes Sea for four consecutive years, reflecting the Philippines' improved maritime security.
