10, 290 km away "drive" medium-sized container ship! "Unmanned ship" test completed

South Korea's HD Hyundai Heavy Industries recently conducted a four-hour demonstration test of remote control of autonomous navigation of large ships and collision avoidance in areas with high traffic density in the sea off Ulsan. What is remarkable is that the 8,000TEU container ship used in the test was sailing in the waters off Ulsan, but the real captain of the ship was located at HD Hyundai Group's Global Research and Development Center (GRC), 290 kilometers away as the linear distance.

It is reported that HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has set up a remote "ship cab" at the global research and development center of the HD Hyundai Group in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, where ships are operated remotely and in real time. In the test, the ship will sail autonomously according to the pre-set course, but in the event of an emergency, someone in the remote "ship's cab" will directly intervene to reset the course.

For the first two hours of the voyage, the remote "ship cab" will monitor whether the ship can keep a stable navigation based on the coastline, contour lines, water depth, lighthouses, dangerous objects, and course displayed on the electronic chart (ENC). The test showed that the ship was able to sail stably in accordance with the routes set in advance by HD Hyundai Group's global research and development center.

Over the next two hours, the ship conducted collision avoidance tests. If a reef is found, the remote "ship's cab" changes course; The remote "ship cab" also resets its course when other ships approach.
